Dr. Matthew Neal is a board-certified neurological surgeon with Roper St. Francis Physician Partners Neurosurgery and Spine. He uses minimally invasive techniques and advanced technologies, including spinal robotics, spinal endoscopy and novel implant materials, to help patients recover quickly and achieve the best possible outcomes.

Dr. Neal earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. After a one-year internship in general surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he completed his neurosurgery residency at the same hospital. He then completed a neurosurgery fellowship focused on complex spinal surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Neal holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee Haslam College of Business in Knoxville.
He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the North American Spine Society. He has received multiple awards, including Patients’ Top Choice from U.S. News & World Report.
Most recently, Dr. Neal served as assistant professor of neurosurgery, director of minimally invasive spine surgery and chair of clinical research at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. An active mentor, presenter and published researcher, he also volunteers globally with the Nepal Spine Foundation, providing ongoing virtual and on-site neurological education to peers in South Asia.
Dr. Neal considers it a privilege to serve the local community and provide personalized, high-quality care. He aims to improve patients’ function and quality of life. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, traveling, staying active and listening to live music.
