Shiannea Gathers, MD

Dr. Shiannea Gathers, is an obstetrician and gynecologist with Roper St. Francis Physician Partners OB/GYN. She provides comprehensive care for women through every stage of life, from pregnancy and delivery to routine wellness and gynecologic care.

Clinical interests and services include:

• Pregnancy care and delivery, including vaginal and cesarean births
• Well-woman exams and preventive care
• Contraception and family planning
• Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, including hysterectomy, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy
• Comprehensive gynecologic care
   

A native of rural South Carolina, Dr. Gathers grew up in a community with limited access to healthcare. That experience shaped her purpose. She became a physician to help patients feel understood and confident in their care, and to build the kind of trust she saw missing for so many families like her own.

Dr. Gathers describes her approach as deeply patient-centered. She values the relational side of medicine and makes a point of connecting with each patient, building the rapport and trust that help people feel genuinely cared for. For her, it is a privilege to be part of some of the most significant moments in a patient's life, sharing in the joys and offering steady support through the harder times.

Caring for the underserved is central to who Dr. Gathers is. Throughout her training, she volunteered providing gynecologic care to uninsured and underinsured women, including weekly care at a free community clinic, and she helped teach middle-school girls about their health and bodies through a local education program. Having grown up understanding the barriers that can stand between people and good care, she is committed to equitable, compassionate women's health and to improving maternal health in the communities she serves.

Dr. Gathers earned her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She earned her bachelor's degree in biology, graduating with honors, from Winthrop University.

Outside of work, Dr. Gathers enjoys traveling, spending time with her family and exploring fashion and makeup.
